Inspiration In White: Zinc

The look of any zinc pot, frame, mirror...well anything really.. feels instantly French. Such a warm and beautiful metal it only looks better with age and patina. As I was researching zinc I realized how versatile this material can be and I especially like seeing it used on counter tops in the kitchen. Very stain resistant and easy to clean it can add so much to the look but it is also a rather soft material and can be prone to scratching so something to think about before installing. (Do any of you have zinc counters? I would love to know if you like them!)

My favourite use of zinc though is in pots and finials. Although zinc is generally fairly resistant to rusting, if left outdoors for long, it does begin to change in colour which I think just adds to the character and beauty of the piece. I often see zinc items for sale at Dreamy Whites and Atelier de Campagne so go over to their sites to take a look!

Here are a few photos I found of some lovely zinc pieces...

Enjoy!

In the Details..

This is the home of Annabelle Kerslake who is the editor of the on-line magazine Fete. A wonderful open plan space offsetting dark furniture with white and cream. I love the Victorian letter holder that has a card from a photo shoot for the magazine as well as the silver stag head. A bird decal on the wall above vintage books is another of the cool fun elements in this home. The bedroom of Annabelle's daughter is especially cute with the white and pink striped tent over the bed and the ruffled bed cover makes this space perfect for any little girl.

So many beautiful details in this home and I think that is what makes any home so different and special...

Contemporary Chic

This home, all done up in neutrals, is so chic and contemporary yet still very comfortable. Gorgeous textures and the mix of old and new pieces keep it interesting. Love the bathroom fixtures and the use of mirrors in the dining room. Pale walls blend with the floor and furniture to create a soft and warm space. Really lovely..

Beautiful home in Milan with amazing skylights and floor to ceiling windows that reflect white washed wood ceilings and floors. The beautiful doors in the living area lead to a large terrace outside that is really a wonderful place for family or entertaining. Things I am loving: Shots of colour in the Smeg  fridge and bright books and the tulip table and chairs in the dining room. Also loving the sink on the wooden shelf in the bathroom! Isn't that perfect for a smaller space...

Wonderful White Home

This home is floor to ceiling white and I just cannot get enough of it! Most of the rooms in this home are painted white and even the stairway is all white with no contrasting wood at all. There are small touches of colour found here and there in the furniture and on the walls in the upstairs bedrooms. Love the white/grey washed wood wall, floor and cupboards in the kitchen. Even this seems like a big contrast against the entry and living room. Simple and beautiful!

Inspiration in White: Red and White Linen

So much to love about red and white linens. They feel typically French and many of the grain sack pillows, hand towels and table runners we are seeing are made with these incredibly durable linen and hemp materials from France, Belgium and Germany. I especially love the linens that have initials embroidered onto the piece. Some of these linens are up to a 100 years old so it makes you wonder about the original family that took the time to stitch their grain sacks.

I am starting a collection of antique linens that I think could be a bit dangerous as once you buy a few pieces you can not resist looking for more. I have added the cushions below to my shop and have also added a wonderful table runner in red and an oatmeal colour.  Also have a gorgeous vintage chair upholstered in a red and white hemp grain sack. Just beautiful!

Cushions available in my shop made from Antique French Grain sack.

Love this bag made from linen..

Pretty embroidered frabric on this settee.

Vintage chair covered in red and white grain sack. This one is in the shop!

This is such a great idea from Dreamy Whites! What a nice way to bring a gift of a bottle of wine to your hostess.

This is the table runner and Grain Sack cushion available in the shop! Love how it looks against the white settee!

Designer Home

I really like Rue Magazine and the latest issue has got some great homes and ideas.

This months feature is on designer Caitlin Flemming. The home that she decorated below is actually the home of her mother and their collaboration was obviously a labour of love..and great taste. So simple... but the pieces! The gorgeous mirror in the living room, the armoire in the dining room and of course the amazing antique bed (I am afraid I would have to paint that bed white. I featured a really similar bed on Facebook in white and it is to die for!).

Mora Clocks

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

You all know my love of Swedish style.. the simple way the rooms are arranged, the white palette and the delicate design of the furniture.

I have a particular obsession with Mora Clocks and have been searching for one for many years. Mora clocks were traditionally made in the town of Mora in Sweden and began production in the late 18th century and continued to be made right through the 19th century. They are essentially a grandfather clock and have wonderful varied colours and shapes. Some even have a kind of crown or ornament on the top of the clock.

There are really none to be found in Quebec or at least it is very rare but I hold out hope that I will one day have one in my home, in fact I have just the spot!

Loft Makeunder

The East Village loft of designer John Derian was a makeunder project and not a makeover. His desire to keep the original patina of the place is evident in the walls and floors of this former garment factory. Rather than taking the typical approach of removing and replacing the old he has done a fantastic job of lightly restoring and even leaving certain elements that give this loft such character. The antiques and art in the living room are what I really love..
